Slug Gun Season 2006 ----- by Smoothy
This story has so many turns and twists in it; I really don’t know where to start.

The simple version is probably the best beginning.



Slug season 2006. Four Hunters arrived, Four Deer Died, All left happy, It was a great season!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, The rest of the story.



Three ( 3 ) of the ( 4 ) hunters actually made it for the first day. Everything was going fine, I was the first to arrive, Then NoButt, then Pops, After arriving and setting up camp, We made our traditional Run into Wally World for last minute supplies and needs. Upon return we are excited, and ready for a good nights sleep as we must get up early for the first day, 4:00 A.M. is wakeup call, We are up and getting all the last minute things done and head for the mountains. I head for my tree stand to wait quietly and patiently for the unsuspecting buck to venture my way. Pops and NoButt head for their prospective ground locations since they are not fond of height. The woods are quiet, not too cold, 30 degrees or so and no breeze; the stillness of the woods is both spooky and comforting. All is in place, All is well, We wait, and sit, and think, and then we realize, maybe, just maybe, this is it, this will be the time, The time you get the big one, You Know, The big buck with horns like the Hartford Insurance deer, That humongous creature we all dream of needing a truck to haul it back to camp and having the bragging rights just once of saying ” BEAT THAT  “ and smiling, and then you doze off……………  All of a sudden something wakes you up, “ What was that?” Wow! It’s daylight already, Was that a gunshot? Quickly you scan the area. No deer, Nothing to shoot at, What time it? You glance at your watch, Hmmmm  6:45  It just got daylight, you didn’t miss anything yet, you couldn’t see except for the last few minutes, You comfort yourself with that thought and settle back to watch, and wait, and listen…..  Your little 2 way crackles with news from other hunters already disgruntled and complaining about hunting conditions, but you ignore them and just turn the 2 way down. You also realize you are getting cold, so you start to zipper up your layers of clothing to save the body heat. Sure enough, you can’t seem to zipper things up with your gloves on so you take them off and zipper yourself up. In this process you drop a glove, While trying to see where it went, you also lose your hat, Then you realize. They are on the ground…… 35 feet below you, on the ground!! You have got to be kidding me.. What to do now??? Sit here and freeze, or go down and get them. You decide to “Tough it out” but in a few minutes realize it’s too cold for this so you unload, and drop your fire arm, your knap sack with all your supplies, and loosen your safety equipment and start you trek down to the ground. Once down, you pick everything up and secure it, This will NOT happen again !!! Quickly you look around,, Hmmmm  no deer, no one watching you to make fun of your circumstances, Ha, Your in the clear,,,  Back up in the tree, we are settled again, all is secured, You have double tied everything, no more mistakes, you sit, and wait, and think, and enjoy the vast wonders surrounding you that the good Lord has provided and you are in peace, and all is well.

9:00 ::  You here a noise, What is that? You scan the area, Out of the nowhere, two ( 2 ) deer come into view, they are heading your way and your heart rate goes into hyper drive, You get your firearm and look through the scope. Hmmmm two ( 2 ) doe!!! A big on, and a smaller one. They stop in the high brush and start feeding, The larger one is the closest, the smaller one on the outside shadowing the other, You aim, patiently you watch for a clearing, for clear site, but the brush is getting thicker so you take you shot. A HIT !!!!!! Or is it? The large deer jumps, and run off, the smaller one falls. Huh???? How did that happen? Oh well, I got me a doe!!!! Hee Haw!!! Then the deer gets up, Oh no, This one is NOT running away, so you shoot it again. Down it goes, Ha, You got it now!!! Wait, it’s getting up again. You shoot again, down it goes, you watch, it’s still moving, You have got to be kidding me, it’s trying to get up again. You fire again, This time it just looks around, What????  I must be shooting blanks, I couldn’t have missed it . The fifth and final shot and it’s down again……….. but still alive……. I can’t see it easily as it is amongst a lot of thick brush… Then it dawns on me, Yup!!! I know what’s happening, These cheap sabot slugs I received from a certain camp member for a birthday present are hitting the brush and splattering into a bunch of fine pieces. They must have been purchased from Cheap Charlie’s surplus outlet and here I am just peppering this poor deer to death. I’m going to go down there and finish it off once and for all. Yeah, right, First thing I must do now is unfasten all the things I double tied and get them loose so I can get down, While I’m doing this, I watch, That deer is still moving, It has it’s head up and is looking around. I better hurry up, I keep undoing the granny knots I used to keep things from falling down, The deer is hearing me move and is getting excited. Finally, all is untied and lowered, accept for my firearm. Do I lower it? Should I shoot one more shot just for good luck? What to do, what to do, Ah, finally the deer has lowered its head and is going to sleep, I’ll drop my firearm down now…   As I lower myself to the ground, The deer comes alive….  It gets up!!!! Low and behold it takes off with a giant leap, My heart sinks as I’m only half way down the tree and my shotgun is on the ground far from reach. Disgusted I continue to the ground. I gather my things and get ready for tracking, That deer can’t go too far, I find the location where I first shot it, and followed another few yards and there it is…. DEAD !!!! It looks like it had given on last effort and finally gave up. Happy again, I start to field dress it and then my heart sinks. ( This is starting to sound like a soap opera….  Eh???? ) It has scent sacks!!! Huh??? Quickly I check the head again…. Yup…  It has two very little buttons on it; It’s a button buck!!! This is not good, Landowner will frown on this kill, Oh well, I got me a deer and off to camp I go… 

After my venture to camp I’m back in my tree for the rest of the day with no more events happening until around 4:00 when a doe and another 6-point buck come into view. Once again, adrenalin starts to take over and excitement is to its max. Again, I aim, this time at the Buck, I fire, Yes..  I hit my mark and down he goes.  I climb down once more, This is the last time for the day, Field dress him, and off I go back to camp, I now have ( 2 ) deer, and all is well.

That evening over dinner, We talk to each other about the days events, I find out that one member was snoozing and wakes up in time to see a nice spike buck walking out of range, The other member also reports of seeing a very large buck which excited him to the extreme. He recounts his events to the best of my recollection as follows. 

He was watching this large buck walking past him. It was one off the largest he has seen at camp so far, he waits, and watches, he is patient, waiting for just the right time, Experienced hunters do that you know. As the buck comes into the zone, he picks up his weapon, draws a sure and steady aim, takes a deep breath and slowly squeezes the trigger. He feels the trigger release, and waits for the explosion,  WHAT !!! No EXPLOSION???? Nope!! Instead, the barrel breaks open!!  He has released the lock on his barrel instead of the pulling the trigger, The noise startles the buck! In the heat of the moment, The almighty hunter has blundered this bag and the buck happily jumps off into safety thanks to the latches and trigger being in close proximity of each other. We all enjoy a good chuckle over this event and now it was my time to explain my story. After I told them my story, Pops said to me, HA…  “That poor deer got tired of you trying to kill it, so he jumped and broke his neck just to be put it out of his misery.” What could I say, I explained about the sabot slugs splintering, and they just laughed.. After dinner, we rested a bit before retiring. A cell phone ring and it was the fourth member of our party. Boze was calling to see how the day went since he could not make it this year for some reason. After giving him the short version, we told him he could at least show up for a Sunday hunt. We would then be a complete camp with all its members. After hanging up and a few minutes later, the door busts open and low and behold it is “Boze” Our missing member, He fooled us into thinking he was not showing up and was enroute the whole time. Tomorrow is going to be a good day!!!!!!!

Sunday morning arrives and we are ready!!!By 6:00 A.M. MOST of us are, if not there, headed into position. All are at their normal locations; Boze is in “The Basket” for his first day. Except for me, I am stuck at camp with a painful back from dragging those two deer to camp. A few shots are heard during the morning but don’t sound like they are from our area. While cleaning up camp I some how pop my back into shape and pop a few Aleve and I’m back in the hunt. I decide to walk the property parameter in an attempt to herd the deer close to our property line back deeper onto our property. I meet up with ‘Pops, who thinks I might be a poacher and is going to confront me. After hearing of an uneventful morning from him, He proceeds to tell me to stop a see Bose, He got him self a buck!!!

And he did… It was a beauty, Both the Buck ( a eight pointer ) and the gooney on his nose from the scope hitting him in the excitement of the hunt.,  Although I found that to be kind of funny, I must admit, It was a dandy deer and the largest on this hunt as it dwarfed my little ones. The rest of the day was uneventful and we retired after a good dinner and recapping our days stories. Boze leaves for home happy with a deer in his favor. Monday morning has arrived and we move with a little less hustle in our step. The hunting so far is starting to wear on us and we are a little more hesitant about freezing in the woods. The weather is getting colder and the wind is starting to increase. WE finish our day with no stories or events. We sit at dinner recapping old stories for enjoyment since no new events were had to speak of.

TUESDAY !!!  LAST DAY !!! These events are priceless!!!!

Tuesday morning starts out as usual. We had the usual breakfast, all went to their locations, and the morning wears on. Then… Shots fire!!! I hear one from above me, and four, or was it five, coming from the pines… Maybe, Pops wishes will come true; Maybe there will be 4 sets of horns hanging from the swing set at days end. A true marvel of accomplishment for all of us to have a trophy to take home all in the same season at the same time. Well now, Here where it all gets a bit goofy..  I hear the four-wheeler start up and see pops on it heading for the pines. Yup, Looks like he got one!!!! While it takes him a long time to retrieve it and return to the camp, I think nothing about it and keep on waiting for my third and final deer.  I keep looking for NoButt to drag a deer past me, but he never shows up. Since only one shot was fired from his area, I feel he hung his deer in a tree and continued hunting for another. Surely, He couldn’t miss another one..  Well, day ends and we start packing up to go back to camp. I saw a few but they were too far away to get a shot at, NoButt comes walking down from his area with no deer, Claims to have just cleaned out his barrel, O---Kay!!!!! He does proceed to tell me that Pops did get a deer and it was an event to talk about. He tells me that pops fired five ( 5 ) shots at it and couldn’t kill it. The deer continued to run and ended up dead in stream in the water. With that in mind, And telling you all the previous events, I have come up with my own version of what really happened. Here goes!!!!

Pops, who also had those cheap Charlie surplus sabot slugs saw this buck to shoot at, Since he did not have a weapon like NoButt that had a barrel to break down by hitting the wrong latch, and, was in the pines so he didn’t have the brush and twigs to deflect and splinter those cheap sabot slugs, Should have had an easy kill, but, He also had a new shotgun which sports a little baby sized barrel, heavy as it is, it is also more like a sawed off barrel which suggests to me that the range may not be what it should be. Anyways, HE fired at this buck, and probably hit it or at least nicked it. The deer may have tripped or even fell over a log but did in fact give Pops time to fire another volley of slugs which emptied his gun, in an attempt to disable him. This buck being a sporting creature finally submitted to its demise be jumping into the stream and drowning itself to be put out of it’s misery. Yielding a buck in the bag for Pops….
